Generator storage?

So the camper doesn't have a compartmen large enough for the little Honda 2000 generator I picked up. ($600!, Craigslist is awesome!)
Was thinking about just strapping it to the roof of the camper. Have some little grab rails around the back end of the roof.
Otherwise I have to store it inside on the floor. Not bad, but I really dont want it bouncing around inside the camper. Not ready to do the hitch rack deal as it will just promote bringing more "stuff" with.
Roof seems plenty sturdy, but I'd still throw a little piece of plywood or something under it to save wear and tear on the roofing material.
Gene in one corner, gas can in the other, strapped down.
If it's not too loud, could just fire it up, up there, without even removing it.
Can throw a little bicycle lock on it to help with sticky fingers if needed.
Aside from the obvious concern like height, since it will be a bit higher than the AC, any other issues with this?
  • The Honda 2000i fits into a Rubbermaid Action Packer very nicely. Add a gasket to the top and no gas smell and extra room to keep cords, oil and such. I have 2 Honda 2000i's on the new one I had to mod. the interior of the top a little, 5 min worht of work.
  • Yeah, try climbing that narrow little ladder with one hand while carrying a 50lb generator in the other... You'll do that exactly once.

Unless you drive like a sausage, aiming for every pothole, the generator won't be "bouncing around inside." Just set it inside the back door, with the "long" side against a wall.

I've personally never had anything heavy, low-slung, and rubber-footed like that move around inside the camper, even in panic stops.
  • If you are willing to climb up there to run it, or carry it up and down, it should be OK. Personally, that would probably be my last choice.

I would go with hitch rack first choice or inside TC (in plastic tub). Another option might be back seat for the Honda. Where to carry gas can be a problem. I carry my gas on a bicycle rack attached to my ladder.

If you do a search, you will find just about every method of carrying the Honda and Gas.

  • Aside from putting 60 pounds up on the roof to act as a sway lever, the exhaust fumes are way to close to window and vents for my comfort, think carbon monoxide poisoning. Do you really want to be a roof climber in inclement weather? Plus think of all the bugs, dust, rain, and occasional tree branches that it will be exposed to.
