Getting around

As a spin off from another thread, I thought I'd start a new one on how us TC'ers get around once we have set up camp. Some drop the camper off and drive the truck, others pack up and head to do sight seeing and such. But for me and my DW, we like to take little motorcycles along. We can then leave camp set up, the dog to chill for a couple hours or so and get out and about further than we could on bicycles.

Right now, we have the Twins; a pair of 1974 (That's right! 40 year old) Honda Trail CT90's. I got them from a guy who's parents put them in a storage rental over 30 years ago and recently died. They have under 1000 miles on them and were pretty easy to get back into shape. They are utterly reliable and since Honda made like, a bazillion of them, and still make them even today, just not imported to USA, parts are readily available.

  • I've thought about a dune buggy, but they seem to really hold their price. I've also been thinking about a Suzuki Samurai. I had one years ago. Not fast, but with a rag top, almost as fun as a motorcycle.
  • We have bicycles, motor scooters, a sport touring motorcycle or street licensed dune buggies to get us around in fair weather. The oldest vehicle is a 1952 and the newest is a 2009. When the weather is foul, we drop the camper and take the truck.
  • I've been hauling the bikes like Buzz, but in order for BOTH me and DW to get out to the fishing holes, we were going to need a little more than muscle power. Our first BIG test will be to Yellowstone this summer. I plan to set up camp for a couple weeks and ride the Trail 90's to get around the park for day trips.
  • They were pretty much as you see them. I pulled the tanks to de-rust and seal them, then pulled the carbs and cleaned those. I replaced some rubber parts; tires, fork boots and fork seals. I added the buddy seat and tool pouch on the bars of one. We take that when we don't want to tow the trailer and it goes on a carrier mounted to the front receiver hitch.

    The bikes actually started when I first got them; put in fresh oil, some gas and on the third kick for one and 4th kick on the other, they fired up!

    I put $700 into fixing up the 1970 CT90 and sold it for $2500. I bought the twins for $2500.
  • Were the "twins" in the pictured condition or did you restore them.

    I had a similar one ( a 66 or 67 model) 40 something years ago, I believe in 1970.

    I like the look of your two. And unlike today's bikes, they were super quite.
  • Before I got these two, we had one, a 1970, yes, 44 years old, Honda CT90 I had given to me because it was in such bad shape the guy was going to toss it in the trash. I recently sold it and made enough to buy the Twins. Here's some photos of the first CT90 we had;
