I agree, removing the TC on the side of the road would present a another more serious safety situation.
My stock jack set that came with my truck has several, I think three, extensions that you slide through the hole just above the bumper to facilitate you cranking the tire down.
If I just just two of the extensions it gets the crank just about a foot past the bumper. Now the crank handle is not set up to attach to that extension so I purchased a ratcheting type open end wrench that I can slip over the extension and quickly lower the spare.
