You have heard from most of the Ford haters already. I would keep it for now and wait until your closer to full timing. Just save money from now until then in case you decide to trade and you will have the cash to trade with. Lots of things can change between now and then.

I would go to a Ford forum and ask what mods to perform. That truck can be made to make huge power while getting fantastic mileage and missed it becomes very dependable.

I would keep it. I'm not into replacing perfectly good five year old vehicles, certainly not based on a possible change in how I use it. I will buy something new when a lifestyle change suggests, but not for something I anticipate that far into the future. If you like the truck drive it until it breaks or wears out, or until you get it to 10-15 years old, 200,000 to 300,000 miles, see how you feel about it then.

You might start putting the loan payment or lease fee for a new one into a special savings account, you'll have the new truck paid for before you need to buy it. What you buy 8 years from now will likely be quite different from anything you can buy today, Motor vehicles are starting to evolve more quickly, with increased regulation.

Dump it.

My tech friends that work on these 6.4 engines for a living say they are on borrowed time after the warrantee runs out at 100K.

Full time? Get a 1 ton or even a class 6 up next time. :)

3/4 ton diesel for full timing with a 5er doesn't seem like a good combo. Full timers add a lot of things for traveling that long at a time, like 3-4k pounds of gear over dry weight! So, take a 12k dry RV, 15-16k loaded, that's 2250 pounds of pin weight minimum, maybe 3700 pounds. Your payload is likely in the 2700 pound range which has to carry the pin weight plus you, spouse, and a 200 pound hitch and anything else you stuff in the bed around the hitch. I recommend a dually with 5k-6k pounds of payload, plus the stability for 4 rear wheels with 3000+ pounds of weight in the bed, plus safety if any blowouts.

250k miles on the engine may be fine, but that much seat time and miles on the rest of the truck is a lot for light duty trucks.

Keep what you got until you are closer to full timing and plan to replace the truck at that time. The 6.4L has been pretty good, but less fuel efficient than competitors and Ford's current 6.7L. That will be significant when full timing.

It seems the F250's are just a little bigger than the F150's these days... I think it depends on what you get 6-8 years from now. The F350 with duallys would be a great truck to have. I know you probably want a fifth wheel but the large TRUCK CAMPERS almost have the same amount of room a fifth wheel has You might fall in love with one of those... These are the large truck campers that has the entry door on the rear side...

The problem with the really big rigs is gas mileage and upkeep and where can you park one or stop for fuel... Can't be alot of fun man-handling the real big 40-foot plus rigs... I don't think there will be much slack time as far as keeping the big rigs up to par... Be prepared for that...

As for me I am over the hill now so it will be my off-road camper for here on out haha...

For what ever its worth WE can still drive through a McDonalds and order from the window with our setup. We have 90% of what you have appliances wise - just a tad short on floor space hehe... Well a lot short as it is. This makes us live more on the outside then the inside I reckon. The inside is for sleeping more or less... I have almost ZERO maintenance for all of this good stuff...

Shoooot, 80,000 miles on a diesel, it ain't even broke in yet.

No, really. I'm being serious. Whereas a gasser can be expected to need an engine overhaul at around 200,000 miles, a diesel will easily go 300,000-500,000 miles before needing an overhaul. Take good care of it, fix things when they break/wear out, and get back to us when you hit quarter of a million miles.

Based on your numbers, eight years from now, the truck will be 13 years old with close to 250K miles.
Only you can decide if this would be a situation you would be comfortable traveling with. Like others have stated...wait till you get closer to the time to pull the trigger on something.
