  • I got the diesel more because I wanted it, then needed it. Sometimes you gotta spend the money (if you have it) on a fancy dinner snooty beer or diesel truck. Can’t take your money to the grave!!

You know how many miles it would take to to pay off the upgrade from your old 6.4L from the 5.7L version of the 2500? Never, because it not only cost more up front for the added 27 hp and 29 lb-ft of the 6.4L, but the running cost is higher so the added cost increases the longer you own it. So even if you trade it in and recoup most of your up front cost, it will cost a few thousand more.

This is why the Cummins actually costs less for most than the 6.4L, but more than 5.7L when all things are considered like resale/trade-in.
  • 3rd grade math is hard for those guys, evidently.
  • Like another poster said you dont need to pay it off, besides calculate in the resale that will be much higher. Also do you figure payoff buying higher trim levels or options vs bare bones? Money saved there that could buy the diesel option.

  • I just hauled a 20,000lbs loaded trailer double stacked and 10’ wide with bales 35mi against a 20-40mph quartering head wind. The way the old D-max was working to hold 55-60mph I think my 6.2 gasohol F350 might have given me range anxiety. :) :)
  • You don't need to "pay off" the diesel upgrade. It pays back (sometimes with interest) when you sell the truck.

Besides, who in the world buys a diesel because it's cheaper? You buy it because it does the job better and more comfortably.
  • I'd say I'm very close to paying off the diesel. I also get better than 10 MPG when I'm towing.
