GM 6.0 oil leak

I have an '11 GMC Sierra 2500 HD with the gas 6.0 that has started to leak oil. It has 29K on it and is still has 3 months warranty. Since the oil was changed 4 weeks ago I suspected that they didn't get the filter tight since I saw oil dripping from the filter.

I took it in to the dealer today and they said it wasn't the filter but they couldn't tell where it was coming from. They cleaned the engine, put some dye in the oil and said to bring it back next week for a recheck with the dye.

They said leaks were rare for this engine. Anyone have leak issues for the 6.0?

Yes, this is always a good idea especially when you are running close to the end of your warranty.

Fortunately I have complete faith in my dealer. We were neighbors for 19 years, his son and I have been spotters for each other at the gym for nearly 25 years and my nephew works for them. When they hired a new service manager I was introduced to him and he was told "if he asks for a steak, go get him a steak".

I was just curious if anyone else ever had leak issues. I'm hoping it does end up being the filter. I will certainly update after it goes back in next week.
  • I have heard of no trending issues with the GM 6.0L gas V8. It has been massaged since its introduction around 2000. Many reports of 300k miles. Hopefully the dye works and it was just a mistake with the prior oil change itself.
  • There is an old Internet hoax about those engines wearing out in just a few miles. Perhaps you got the one in ten million that did? Just kidding, they are good engines.

  • My '08 has 135k on it, and there's not a drop of oil in my garage.

I'm inclined to think if the filter wasn't tightened properly, they wouldn't admit it. They can bill out the extra labor as warranty work. Free money.
  • :) Hi, the oil dye test works pretty good. Let them finish the test and see what they find. Near the oil filter is usually an oil sending unit and some passage plugs that can leak.
  • If they took that filter off and rethreaded it on or tightened it, I am guessing that the leak has stopped regardless if they say it was the filter or not.
