I know you said no to diesel and no to anything but GM but the 6.4 gasser in the Ram is the best gasser for towing right now. 400 ish HP and its a beast. There should be some used examples popping up as towers upgrade to diesel.
I'm a Gassers guy like you and would consider any of the big three with the deepest axle ratio possible.
IMHO...an 8.1 would upgrade your motor but the trucks are getting old that surrounds them. If you can swing it I recommend going for the 6 speed. 6.0 or the 6.4 Ram with 4:10 gears
The other option is to upgrade to 4.56 years in your truck now to improve the towing experience.
Good luck...hunting is the fun part.
Thanks!

I have had several diesels in the past and they cost me a fortune to keep on the road and I was always leery of taking long trips in them. The 6.0 I have now has been the best, most reliable truck I have ever owned. It also has more miles than any other truck I have had.
I would absolutely consider a 6.4 Ram but it is out of the budget. I would consider a V10 Ford but I have a ton of aftermarket stuff (rims, tires, Bilsteins, gooseneck hitch, front hitch, Curt 17k receiver, airbags on order, etc) that I can take off of my truck and put on almost any 01-10 GM 2500HD
4.10 gears are a must have for me. (4.30s if I was looking for a Ford)
I have considered modding my truck with gears, (4x4 means 2x the $$) a cam, headers, custom tune ( I have a Cold air intake and a Superchips programmer now) etc. but I would be spending thousands on a truck with close to 200k on it. I could put that money with whatever my truck will bring and be close to the price of a newer truck that would be better out of the box.
