The 4.5L V6 was a 6.6 dmax in a V6 configuration. Really no different than GM did with the venerable 350, looped 2 cylinders off, made it a 90* V instead of 60 IIRC, or the other way around, and they had a 4.3 V6 that went into a number of smaller rigs. Same basic parts as the 350. Really no different than Ford with the 4.0 v6, 5.4 v8 and 6.8 v10. All used the same pistons, rods, bearings etc. Way cheaper on the production end of things.
