GM Maintenance Plan (Service Contract)

I recently purchased a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 with the Duramax. As part of the sales pitch they offered an extended maintenance plan that covered all service related items such as diesel exhaust fluid, oil changes, wipers for 7 yrs or 70,000 miles. It also included a road hazard warranty for the wheels and tires. They charge $1,000 for the plan.

Keep in mind that the new GM vehicles have 2 yrs and 24,000 miles maintenance included so the warranty is actually 5 yrs or 46,000 miles.

Having never owned a diesel before I am wondering if the $1,000 is a good deal or if I am better off paying for service on my own. I have always change my own oil but the intervals are 7,500 miles now. I did not purchase the plan but I am wondering if it might be of value.

Can anyone speak from experience on this?

  • In that 46k you are looking at roughly 6 oil changes. At $100 per oil change plus, $30 worth of DEF at that oil change, $50 for a fuel filter each time, 1 $50 air filter and $30 worth of wipers you would have spent $1130. But.....Good Luck getting a fuel filter at every oil change and I'm thinking $100 for the oil change is high.( I do my own for less than that with Amsoil full synthetic)
  • RAS43, that is what I am trying to determine. It does include DEF, wiper blades, oil changes, tire rotation, but not sure if this is a break even price, loss, or a savings. Just maintenance, not an extended warranty. According to the manuals there isn't any major service required until after this plan would expire.

Based on a 7,500 mile service interval this plan would cover six oil changes and other items listed above.

I believe the OP is talking about a maintenance plan, not the warranty. If so, $1000 for 5 years of maintenance may be worth it if there would more then just oil changes needed during that time.
  • I have lost most of any warranty and usually all of it. Tough call when you look under the hood of cars and truck of today.

  • My 01 duramax had no major issues until 114,000 miles and I had to get injectors. Save your money.
