GMC 6.0L Hauls plenty

Some comments over the years about the lack of power in a GM 6.0L gas truck.

We just left a campground on Rte 33 in W Virginia outside Harrisonburg ... was hauling 3200 lbs of camper, and a 1100 lb trailer with a 560 lbs bike and a buncha sports gear and 'other stuff' ... So, like Truck 5890 + 3200 + 11000 + 560 + 300 + two passengers at 190 + 130 ... 11370 lbs ...

2003 6.0L 4x4 X cab SB gas 4 sp auto w/3:73 w/199,880 miles on it ... Read a road grade and thought, Oh, OH ... 9% upgrade for 9 miles --

Truck hauled that puppy like it was born to it - so, sometimes, we all get into the size matters, and gears matter and all that other stuff, and makes me wonder what you all are doing to your trucks to make 'em so weak.

This 2003 never blinked, rode it about 40-45 mph with half-throttle due to the curves, and never rose a degree on the engine temp gauge, and raised about an eight higher than normal needle reading on the tranny gauge. So, anyone out there wondering about "wasting" operating money on a "weak engine and high RE ratio" - this set-up works fine, and I get 14 mpg highway and 10-11 towing.

I keep hearing 4:10 and six speed and diesel etc for hauling - well, then you get engine whine and gas money spilling out your pockets. SO, don't let any one convince you a 6.0L gasser won't do the job ... :) :) :)

  • Geez. You were basically doing the same as towing a 5,000# trailer. I sure as *&^%$ hope a 6.0L with 3.73 can do that with ease. Heck, I have an 05 5.3L with 3.73 that routinely pulled 6,000# with ease

Most of conversations you read about the questionability of the 6.0L gasser revolve around pulling >10k# (double the equivalent of what you did). Heck, my FW wieghs about 10k empty and about 12k loaded and yes I would pull that with a 6.0L if needed but I would expect it struggle with it

Just some friendly advice here (its free so it is worth exactly what you are paying for it). Truck ~6k# plus camper ~3,200# plus ~200# passenger plus ~200# tongue wieght puts your truck at roughly 9,600#. Don't remember the specs for your truck but I imagine that is over GVWR (which I could care less about) but most of that load is on the rear axle, you might be exceeding rear tire or axle ratings. Go get the setup wieghed to find out.

Understood but keep in mind, some do tow at altitude,

<-- this guy lives at 8k feet

so it is nice to have that forced induction to help out.
  • My fiver scaled in at 12,280. I couldn't be happier with my 6.0. Full time towing with this weight I would opt for diesel but works well for my needs.
  • We typically scale at just over 10k pounds...I've never wished for more throttle...gobs of power.
  • Yep, it will do it....my 06 used to pull my fifth wheel, but struggled. We bought a smaller camper and our 2011 six speed pulled it swell

But, bought an 8000 pound camper and it is lacking ..... 7 mpg and constant shifting has me looking for a v10 ford or maybe a diesel

The 6.0 is great up to a limit.....
