Going without air bags

I have a 2006 f350 with Firestone airbags. I carry an approximately 3900 pound camper. Thinking about going on a trip with then uninflated since one of them is punctured and repairing or replacing is not in the cards. What differences can I expect if I go with the airbags uninflated?

  • Firestone recommends against running them "empty". If one holds air I would at least put 5 psi in it - if you don't they can suck in and invert on suspension extension which may ruin the second one. Of course if you are eventually taking them out then it doesn't matter.

The bag itself is quite easy and inexpensive to replace. Bags are available on Amazon, SDTruckSpring, Ebay, etc. It takes only a little more time than changing a tire.
  • Torklift upper stableloads and sumo springs instead of airbags have done the trick for me.

X2--- 6,000lbs with current truck and TC in sig
  • Using upper and lower StableLoads on my Ford allowed me to carry 4000 lbs without airbags.
  • Have you considered Torklift Stableloads? Depending on configuration you may find airbags are no longer necessary.
  • I had air bags on 2 of my Fords and carrying variable loads loved them.
Would put 30psi in them even as empty as this seem to improve ride quality.
Last dually is used for camper only and coming from C&C has suspension that handle my >4000 lb camper well, so I did not install bags.
But the few times I drove it empty was making my dental expenses increasing.
I actually have Firestone bag left over that I could send you, but I am in the process of moving, so it is somewhere in the storage 560 miles away. Not likely I can find it soon, but PM me your shipping info.
  • First, are you sure it is punctured? Check the valve stem core tightness.

On my maiden voyage to Montana from WA with my camper and almost 1000 mile trip, my previous truck a '06 SRW, 6.0 PSD, 4x4 Supercab, Long bed did fine. The airbags will keep the truck more level, so you may want to adjust the headlights. The overloads will be engaged for sure which is a good thing.

One thing to keep in mind, keep the black/grey tanks empty when traveling and carry just as much water as you need. Both are a relatively high percentage of weight.
