Good bye V10. What should be next?

We have had 3 Ford V10 250s and were very happy towing our big 5ers all across country. Our present 5er is 11,200 pounds empty. We just got back from the Ford dealer and will have to go with a V8 6.2 liter. We have had a 4.3 rear end and found it beneficial. Has anyone used this vehicle for towing? Are you happy with it? What about power and miles per gallon? I think we will have to go to a 350 to get the 4.3 rear end. We do not want a diesel.
Thanks for any personal experience stories you may have.

"We do not want a diesel."

OK, but you asked for opinions, so here is mine:
Go drive a diesel or two. My personal choice would be the Dodge/Ram Cummins with manual 6 speed transmission, but if you would rather have a Ford or GM that is up to you.
IMO, once you have towed with a diesel, you will wonder why you ever denied yourself the pleasure! For heavy towing they are the best, IMO.
    Good luck in your search.

No actual experience but an observation. Isn't the V-10 still available in the F-450 as an engine option, with rear axle ratio of either 4.30 or 4.88 (not sure on the numbers)? I recall reading this in a tow vehicle board on another forum. Could be wrong and maybe the F-450 is more truck than you need or want, but a thought..................

Never mind. Answered my own question by going to Ford's website and did the "build one" thing for an F-450. Wouldn't allow any powertrain modification. So I guess you can have any F-450 you want...........as long as it's a 4x4 with a diesel under the hood and a 4.30 rear axle ratio...............:E with a suggested price starting at over $50K! :E

I would recommend the F-350 with a 6.2/4.30 rear gear

    x2!
  • It seems that no matter what the subject is a bunch of folks say go with F 350.

    Ya got me.

I tow our 11.5K fifth wheel with the 6.2 and 4.30 diffy. Works great for me.

One thought - with the 6 speed you can probably be at about the same rpm in 5th with the 3.73 and then still have the cruising gear for running empty. I think I shoulda went that route.

Generally the people that recommend Ford, drive Ford. GM guys recommend GM, Dodge guys recommend Dodge.
