Good propane changeover regulator

My propane changeover switch is no longer working. Broke on me while I was camping and had to physically move my propane bottle over to the work side. It will only let me use 1 LP tank. Barely used and it breaks already, sheesh.

What's a good replacement and how hard is it to replace? I'm not very good at plumbing (its either too loose or too tight and strip...) so I'm wondering if this is something I should take to a shop or if it is something I can learn and do myself?

Okay, so what is a GOOD auto change over regulator. I have gone through 2 Marshalls and need another regulator.

My best one is a Rego regulator, but they aren't cheap. I had to order it online.
  • I don't think there is a nickel's worth of difference in any of them. I seem to get about three years or so from each, no matter the manufacturer. My installation is a bit different, I have 4 hoses and two extra fittings in a very tight compartment and still can change the regulator in an easy afternoon. Could do it in an easy morning but I think mornings are for sleeping in and drinking coffee. Be sure to use the yellow Teflon tape

I have had 3 different types, and all of them failed. Not happy with any of them.
I will say that I use mine a lot. Probably 10 years of average use in a year. Still, they are not all that reliable in my book. I am now carrying a spare.

  • When working with brass gas fittings, what I like to is wrap male threads with teflon tape and then apply teflon pipe dope. This insures a good seal and the female fitting will thread on easily. I tighten until just past snug, not like I am fastening a wheel to an axle or a bolt on the hitch--moderate pressure, unlike King Kong. When all is tightened, I will go back and spray all fittings with soapy water. If something is bubbling, I can go back and retighten, spray again, and make sure there is no leak.
  • Pick up a new auto changeover lp regulator at any rv parts store even walmart (Camco, Marshall, Cavagna)
Also get some YELLOW teflon tape (gas tape) for using to seal the threads on hose fittings at regulator.

Here is a you tube vid on 'How To Replace' it.....LINK
