I have three friends that desert camp who have sold their Class A and C rigs for 4x4 trucks. All went a different route for a replacement:

1. Class C to truck camper with toy trailer in tow
2. Class A to fifth wheel toyhauler
3. Class A diesel pusher to fifth wheel towed by one vehicle and toy trailer towed by a second 4x4

All of them got stuck at least once where they had to call a professional service for extraction when friends could not help which influenced their switch over.

Even 4x4 DRW's (6x6) get stuck at the Imperial dunes in CA.. Been there done that twice.. Now I air down while in the parking lot before the sand.

I have 4x4 got stuck 3 feet off the asphalt parking to let the dog run.. my buddy with a GMC DMAX came to pull me out afterwards i wished I had my wife try first with the honda accord then we could keep the situation secret lol

You can always say you went mudding with your best friends wife, with YOUR wife's permission. :)

I often referred to my '04 2500 HD 2WD as the 'One Wheeled Wonder'. It came from the factory with an open differential and I can honestly say I feel the OP's pain. I have been stuck on boat ramps, wet grass, and snow/ice were a real treat.

In 2009 I finally found a fantastic deal on an Eaton Posi LSD unit. I thoroughly researched the merits of limited slip and locking differentials and finally decided I wanted the greater 'road worthiness' of the LSD as opposed to the locking diff.

I've been very happy with my decision and can say the Eaton Posi got me through many situations that would have previously left me spinning one wheel in a helpless truck. That's not to say I haven't been stuck even with the posi. But, when I have been stuck I still got out with a tow.

I have made the truck work and I won't be trading just to get a 4X4. The truck is paid off and with low miles, so I'll be using it for a long time unless something drastic happens. But, I do believe my next truck will be 4X4 just so I have greater confidence in getting out of poor driving conditions.

As a side note, I've done a little searching and I think I could possibly retrofit my truck with a manual transfer case, and front differential from a wrecked truck. As best I can tell, the 2WD 2500HD's are totally identical to the 4X4 trucks minus the extra driveline components. Unfortunately I don't have an abundance of time and it's really not important enough for me to search high and low until I find all the components. So, I guess it will just have to remain a pipe dream.

Try applying the parking brake at the same time you are giving it some gas... Yes, this works... What happens is it slows down the spinning wheel, allowing the other wheel to get some power to it and if it does happen to have better traction than the other wheel, which is likely the case, because the wheel with LESS traction will always spin first, you might just have enough traction to get some forward momentum and get free..

Without the Limited slip or locker, you don't have a 2wd. You have a 1wd. And 1WD is pretty much useless off pavement.

Enough rain will make anything to soft to be on. Any farmer will tell you that. Several years ago a new 4wd Chevy and 5er had to be pulled out by a small John Deere tractor that was parked on grass. 15 plus years ago the fellow that farms my ground had to use his big 4wd JD tractor to pull an 18 wheeler dump truck out cause his dual rear wheeled JD tractor couldn't. Camp on.

Cool thing is, when you get a 2wd stuck, it's easy to get out. When you get a 4wd stuck, you might be in real trouble.
