Grand Canyon - Cold Weather?

So, on my last day, I did see a couple of ravens tearing through someones barbeque scraps. Looked like they left a pan with something on it and the birds had knocked it off the table.

As far as the Trailer Village park, we would not stay there again if we were to go again. In my opinion, it is just a parking lot near then grand canyon. Yes, the location and hookups were there, but that was the only two reasons to stay there. There were no fire pits, it was cold, so we were inside most of the time we were in our campground. During the day it was nice and we were out at the canyon, but the sites were just blah.

Don't know about the sewer hoses but those Ravens can tear a camp apart. We were staying in Mather several years ago and leaving the CG one morning I noticed about a half dozen Ravens in one campsite and they had stuff all over the place from plastic bins the folks had left out.

I have a small light in the utility bay - I assume it would be a good idea to leave that little light on the entire time I am up there right - for the heat?

It is actually a class C that I am selling - looking to buy a trailer in the next few weeks so I posted here as I would ask the question no matter what I was taking up there. Figure the answer would be the same either way.

From my experience last December in Kansas, anything colder than 25 for more than a couple hours will freeze up your water and sewer hoses if they: 1. Aren't insulated (I used heat tape and foam insulation to keep my water lines free down into the single digits). or 2. aren't left running. Even down to 20 degrees if you leave a faucet running at a rapid drip and keep your grey tank valve open and continuously draining through your sewer hose you might be okay, but if you're only there a couple nights it's probably not worth the risk.

If it's going to be getting above freezing during the days, you can always hook up when it's warmer to take showers and dump and then disconnect everything at night, I used that method for a while.

Mr. Bojangles' advice is sound. Keeping fresh water in your tank is a good solution if your tank is enclosed, it'll take longer for that to freeze than a hose and if you don't keep the tank completely full, it allows some room for expansion. Turn your water pump off and run the lines until no more water comes out before you go to bed and they will be more forgiving if things should start to freeze.

I would be tempted to winterize if you're not and have a way of carrying water not attached to the RV's system. We use a 5 gallon water barrel. I would also dump antifreeze in the grey and black tanks so the gates don't freeze along with the contents. But I don't really have to worry about any of that because I gave up camping in the cold quite a while ago. You are a brave soul.

Just did a google search on this and seems to be a common occurance. We will also be there in September. Glad to know this ahead of time.

I think you can put a heavy tarp over your sewer line to thwart the ravens -- anchor it with rocks.
