Grey Tank Question

Have you considered they may actually just be in the vent? Highly unlikely they are actually nesting in a dark, damp place like the tank itself. You should examine the rooftop vent (albeit carefully as they may still be active) and ensure the vent pipe is clear as it can affect proper drainage.

One thing I would suggest is filling it like everyone said, I'd probably do some vinegar but before dumping it I'd drive it around and find a nice bumpy road to try and break up whatever is in there, then flush it with water a couple of times...

You're probably glad it wasn't in the Black tank! :E

Two other things you could try:

Depending on how the tank drain is arranged, you may be able to snake a hose or piece of tubing from the drain up into the tank. Squirting around inside the tank might help break things up.

Adding a bottle of Liquid Plumber or Liquid Draino to the tank, filling it up, and letting it soak could help. The caustic lye in the drain cleaner should help things dissolve.

That or fill it completely once with water, let it sit a while, them dump and repeat until nothing but water is coming out of it. When I say completely, I mean till it backs up into the shower through the drain. This will make sure any nests in it is submerged and will break down in the water. Then check and clean the vent.

Might not be a bad idea to run some water through the sinks and shower drain to make sure the p traps are full of water first so you don't get any wasps flying up through the drains to escape the flooding.

I would fill it about half way with water and take a ride to let it slosh around. May do it a couple of times until it drains clean. And good advise on cleaning the vent.

Those wasp nests are usually made of what looks like paper. I would just fill it with water and drain it a few times.

I would just fill it and dump it several times. Unless something actually plugs it up I would think it would all work its way out. I would check the vents on the roof for nests also. I had one packed so tight it cut of the air flow and made my bathroom stink! I had to pry it out of the vent.
