Grind down Reese extension to 2"?

I bought a Reese 48" extension last year with the thought that I was going to upgrade to a class 5 hitch, well that has been more of a challenge than I expected trying to source a used ford class 5 hitch locally, I have been looking all winter and nothing has popped up within 75 miles and none of the local ford dealers have take offs or they won't sell them. I do not want an aftermarket hitch (I have torklifts).

Anyway, I am now looking at grinding down the Reese extension to fit my current ford 2" hitch, I wanted to see if anyone has done this before?

I am not towing anything, it will be for an aluminum fishing rack to put my coolers on and fishing rods, shouldn't be more than a couple hundred pounds loaded on the back of my camper.
  • Sounds to me that the extension is solid bar, but would be nice to have confirmation?
Grinding is not going to be easy and you kind of waste good extension.
You can buy 2" tubing in 48" length for about $25 and make your own extension for the purpose. You don't need heavy solid bar for your application.
But then, you will have much better COG if you do front mount.
I had once 200+ lb of gray water in my rear tank and that made noticeable difference in handling.
  • It would be pretty thin by the time you lost 1/4 of an inch off each wall. I don’t think that is doable.
  • I think your talking Class 5 as in 2.5" size?
I think you will find a 2" hitch receiver slides inside the extension made for a 2.5" hitch? Could you get a stout (solid?) 2" bar, slide it in your 2" receiver hitch, than into the inside of your 2.5" extension and use 2 pins?
