Half ton tow rating = 12,000#

Yup. GM says it can tow 12,000# with the 6.2L gas V8 rated at 420hp/450tq :E

CLICKY

I say that GM 1500 series ("half ton") must have a heck of a lot of payload!

I wonder if it will require Premium unleaded fuel? It shouldn't with direct injection....

  • Thats a ton of power in any case. Bravo GM.

    I see a 6.4L Hemi in the Ram 2500/3500 in 2014 models.

It will tow the 12000# with NO problem. It is rated for regular gas, not premium and the payload is more than 2000# on the NHT model. It is also slated to replace the 6.0L in the 2500 & 3500 trucks. I routinely tow 10K with ours here in the mountains of the west.

the 5.3 has anywhere from 2100 - 1900 pounds of payload and can tow up to 11,500
  • Problem is that it's not at all uncommon for a tow rating (max trailer weight) to NOT account for the necessary payload that a trailer that size would need. It would be a good idea to check the specs carefully when approaching those limits. Payload is as important as trailer rating.

Remember also that maximum trailer weight is a manufacturers call and merely sets limits for warranty work. They apparently believe they have a reliable vehicle and are willing to back it with the numbers. The true rating for ANY brand is the GVWR and GAWR which are regulated by federal law.
