Hanging stuff in trailer question

How do you guys hang stuff in your trailer? like we want to hang a clock up and i have a key/hat rack. Ive used screws before but walls are pretty flimsy on trailers on some parts. What have you used besides screws? i will use screws for papertowel holder, TP holder and hand towel rack by bathroom sink. Trying to outfit our new camp trailer.

Thanks for replys

  • Clock........hangs on a screw due to keyhole in back of clock. Screw is in wood.

Pictures.....light, medium and HEAVY ones hang on wall using 3M Command Strips.

Ring hand towel holders/towel bars/paper towel holder......all via screws using wall inserts where needed.
Key to wall inserts....run screw in/out of them couple times prior to inserting in wall. Then when running screw in to wall insert they go in without turning inserts.

When hanging stuff, please be aware of at least 2 things -

    1. Assume the object is at least 2x as heavy as its actual weight, to allow for dynamic loading, i.e. bounce loading as you are going down the road.

    2. Mount items as flat as possible to the wall, i.e.imagine where the centre of gravity might be and ensure that is as close to the wall as possible. That way you minimize the pullout load on the attachment point.

Best scenario is to attach with screws and hollow-wall anchors where possible - this is my preferred approach. However when creating holes in the wall you have to consider the permanency of the item, whether the item will be included in a potential sale down the road, etc. If it is a good candidate, there is no problem making holes. The second owner for my previous trailer was so happy to buy it with all the mods (and holes) I made.

Using stick-on solutions should only be considered for light flat objects since the weak link is on the integrity of the laminar structure (u.e. will it pull the decorative wallpaper off the layer beneath?
  • If you're thinking lightweight such as some small pictures, etc, sticky Velcro is perfect. If you need to remove it, it's easy and if there is any residue remaining, some Goo Gone will fix that. In both trailers, DH has used screws for the items you mentioned, but used small plastic anchors as well. He tried just using screws on a small spice rack and it is wasn't a huge success. The anchors fixed it up. If you plan on putting anything on a surface that has the wood finish, be advised that the finish is not always real wood, but a plastic-y finish and the Velcro will pull that little bit off, so try to just use the walls if you can.
  • Kind of depends what we are hanging and how heavy it is...
    Have used with success:

    >Command Strips (they come in different weight ratings)
    >Two sided tape
    >Velcro
    >Different types of hollow wall anchors.
