I guess it could happen anytime, sorry that it happened to you.My buddy had his RV catch fire while climbing a hill in Pennsylvania, and had to drive his small toad home. He was left without credit cards or anything from the RV! Fred.

Pushed him across all 5 lanes and bounced back, luckily not getting hit again in the processes. Out of work for a couple of months in the hospital and rehab.

Question....was that one of the on ramps that has a stop light???? If not, why were you sitting? We've had some pretty darn close incidents at merge lanes, both while in the lane and while on the freeways. People just aren't paying attention and some have never been taught the right way to merge. (rear ending someone is NOT the right way!!!!) Hope everyone is okay!

Birmingham AL during morning rush hour a few years ago - We were crawling along at maybe 5 mph. I was in a 'must exit' lane and didn't want to exit the highway so I was stopped waiting for the semi next to me to finish inching forward so I could change lanes and get behind him. I kept an eye on the side view mirror to see if any cars were coming northward toward town. Sure enough some guy in his fully restored mid 60's muscle car came flying over the crest of the hill. To avoid hitting us, he elected to veer into the center divider. As soon as he did this I pulled forward as to get the cab of the truck next to the rear wheels of the semi. The car bounced off the center divider and sent parts flying under the truck as the car banged into the semi's rear wheels from the other side. Miraculously the driver walked away. The semi and my truck had minor damage mostly from flying car parts.

Has anyone got rear ended while on the highway?

Old- Biscuit traffic came to a stand still on the 295 while merging to the 95.

Biggest issue with many drivers is they have "Tunnel" vision. That is not looking at the big picture!!
My Mother taught me to be always looking well down the road for early warning of issues. Too many only look at the car ahead of them, and then s*** happens!@ They have no time to react correctly.

To the OP sorry to hear of your miss fortune, bummer way to start a vacation.

Not with my trailer but with my first car a used '71 Buick Skylark, 30 years ago. Someone stopped on the ramp going from I-95 to the Washington Beltway to turn into a construction zone. The guy behind him came to a screeching halt, as did I, but the small toyota behind me didn't. Well, he did, but only after slamming into my rear. His whole front end was obliterated. My Buick's rear taillight was pushed in (still worked though), and a few bumper scratches.

Still can't figure out why anyone would stop in the middle of that ramp. It is just not a place to stop, ever!

Stopping in the middle of a ramp still gives you room to get up to speed to "merge" with traffic (my preferred method would be to idle forward...judging that opening....speeding up to fit into that spot). Can Not do that if you stop at the end of the ramp...your run-up speed will be taking place in the traffic lane, instead of the ramp where it should occur.

Of course, if traffic is at a stand-still, you might as well drive to the end of the ramp, and hopefully "take-your-turn" at merging if the oncoming traffic is allowing it.

Either way...YEILD means YOU must stop if merging safely is not possible. The traffic lane has no obligation to allow you in....you have an obligation to merge or STOP.

In 1995 on 127 N of Lansing Mi, stoped in left turn lane. Pulling a popup at the time, 75 miles from home, 75 miles to campground. Young man was not feeling well (drunk) but the cops drove him home. Could not put the back part out on the popup to sleep. Insurance bought us a new one.

I have had my share of close calls on the other end of the OP's problem as well. Accelerating to merge into the 70+ MPH traffic and the vehicle ahead decides to stop and wait until rush hour is over. It is unexpected and when you are merging into traffic you are spending more time looking at the oncoming traffic you are merging into than you are the vehicle in front of you that you fully expect will be merging into that traffic as well. While the driver that re-ends the vehicle in front is always at fault, the other driver can be the practical, if not the legal, party at fault.

12 years ago I was towing a rental 16' Casita on I635 (loop around Dallas) and exiting onto I30 eastbound. Due to construction on I30, traffic was stopped on the ramp and backed up into the right lane. We were waiting to move forward when all hell broke loose. The trailer was hit by a heavy duty pickup towing a trenching machine on a flat bed. The truck belonged to a lawn irrigation company and had a rack on top full of 1" x 16' PVC pipe. The impact pushed the trailer tongue through the trunk of our tow vehicle till it touched the back seat. The rear window shattered and spears of PVC shot over our car and covered the highway in front of us. The Mesquite cop said the trailer may have saved us by deflecting the pipe over us. We were not hurt. The Casita was totaled by its owner, the US Navy. Our car required $12,000 to fix. Luck was with us. :)

Got hit in the side few years ago from a guy coming out of mcdonalds drive thru no one hurt but totalled our year old FW said he didn't see us, state trooper asked him how the he** he didn't see something that big
