Why not inside the camper? Isn't that essentially where the tank(s) are on most TCs?
How about strap it to the roof? Then it's completely out of the way until u need it. On its side wouldn't be taller than the air conditioner.
The tanks are in a separate vented compartment exterior to the inside. a build up of propane inside and one spark could make a camper into a huge bomb. I know there are RVers that do carry them inside but not recommended.
