I agree!!! The natives did what worked best, not what was fasionable and keeping up with the Joneses. Interior and exterior decorators would have gone broke before the paint on their business signs even dried!
Our homes have carpet everywhere (wouldn't have it any other way) including all the bathrooms/both dining areas except for the kitchen floor only which is solid Teakwood. Really gorgeous! Teak is very hard and wears like iron while always looking fabulous and we only oil it about every 2-3 years. It's ultra expensive for solid teak now but was reasonable years ago and so glad we put it in then for about $3.000. Not cheap but reasonable if you wanted something that would outlast you and the next 4 generations. It's what covered the Navy ship's and aircraft carriers decks even thru WWII and beyond. They just had a documentary on the History Channel about it a couple months ago and stated that the teak decks lasted 70+ years and that's on ships in salt water. Our boats (cruisers and sailboats) also had lots of teak on them. I've not yet seen a teak board rot if it even had basic care. Now you can't get more than trim etc on a boat that's solid teak!
Quality carpet is so easy to keep clean and doesn't mold or support mold growth. Even if it does get dirty, just use the steam cleaner and you'd swear it brand new and just laid. Our daughter has a 5,000 sq ft (that's finished) home by the beach and it has white carpet thruout. Looks very nice but will sure show any dirt real quick! No white for us!
