I just made this decision. Was looking at a 3500 diesel Ram for towing and as a daily driver. We both work and don't get to camp as much as we would like, so use would mainly be as a daily driver. After looking at used for some time, I drove a few, talked to some people who did the same and decided to go with a 2017 2500 with a 6.5 Hemi. I have the short bed so parking isn't much of an issue, but the ride is stiffer. I'll have enough payload for the small/mid size fiver in my near future. Sure, it will rev higher while towing and the diesel would be a better engine for towing, but I believe (from my research) the diesel would be more expensive to operate and maintain. I reached a good decision for me and my needs - not trying to start a war between gas and diesel.
The diesel engine will add weight and about 8K the price - new or used. A lot of low mileage diesels were priced as high or higher that some new 2017 diesels that dealers are trying to get rid of. I've been driving it for about a week and really love it. You could try and rent a full size pickup from Enterprise for a few days to get the feeling for it. I ended up doing this because my 2003 Tundra sold in one day of my listing it online.
Good luck.
