If you use your TT once or twice a year for long vacations, you can always rent a behemoth large enough for your trailer.
If you use your TT a couple of time a month, then maybe you can justify the added cost and maintenance of a bigger TV unless you drive a lot of miles.
My neighbor's diesel Jetta gets about 30 mpg around town, my F-150 gets 15 mpg around town. If we both drive 10,000 mile a year in our day to day driving. At $3.00/gal. for gas, he saves about 10 cents a mile or about $1000.00.
Even if I add an extra $500.00 for maintenance on my truck over his car, I cannot justify another vehicle based on gas and maintenance; if I do any reasonable amount of towing.
It really comes down to the individual situation, new trucks are expensive as are new trailers. In general the cost of gas and maintenance is a small part of the mix.
I don't "need" to "justify" my F250 as a "daily driver", in fact we have THREE F250s as daily drivers.
Last car we had as a daily driver was a 93 Cougar, and a HD F150 truck..
Moved to F250 trucks and don't miss those soft rides, found that the heavier trucks tend to not need front end parts replaced as often and are much easier on brakes and tires.
Yeah, the 3/4 ton mileage is a bit lower at 15 mpg than say a 1/2 ton but it isn't bad considering that 3/4 ton trucks back in the 1970s-early 1990s often got 5-6 mpg unloaded..
The point being is buy and drive what YOU like no need to justify, if you like the lighter 1/2 ton trucks then buy one. If you don't mind a bit stiffer ride and have MUCH MORE towing capacity then buy a 3/4 or 1 ton..
The funny thing is my coworker that I ride share with LIKES my F250 ride BETTER than his Honda Civic (and I would tend to agree with that).
