I think you inadvertently answered the question.
In 1972, a 19' trailer was very common and probably only weighed 2000-3000lbs. A 25-28' trailer was big. At the same time your average passenger car weighed 4000-5000lbs and came with a big V8.
I would say the average trailer today is pushing 27-30' and weighs in around 7000-10000lbs. I don't think there is a passenger car around that can pull that kind of trailer, most of your SUV's can't and the lighter duty 1/2 ton pickups can't
...end result being within weight ratings is a lot tougher to meet.
