Hellwig Front Sway Bar???

Has anyone installed the Hellwig 1 1/4 inch Front Sway Bar on their 11 and up F250 or F350 SRW Pickup?

My 2012 F350 Super Cab LWB XLT 6.7L seems to have quite a bit of sway in the front end. This is especially true moving slowly such as turning into service stations or other off angle turns. Its true it only has the FORD OEM puny Rear Anti Sway Bar but the front seems to accentuate sway. The Truck has Rancho 9000XL Shocks, Timbren Enhanced Suspension System as well as Torklift Quick Release Stable Loads in the rear.

The Truck I have is not overloaded but it does carry an Eagle Cap 950 Camper pretty much full time. True the Campers now days are tall so some sway is expected. I just want to reduce the apparent front end sway and wonder if others have used the Hellwig Sway Bar in the front and what results you experienced.

  • I have a chevy 3500 dually - so not quite apples to oranges..
I replaced the front bar and added a rear bar after putting on the air suspension, and it leaning with the wind. The pair made it lean far less then the stock metal springs ever did. It is no sports car, but it handles closer to a compact then a dually in the curves.
  • OJ,
I feel the pain....I installed the Factory Rear Anti Sway Bar myself last winter and I dread ordering up a HELLWIG Big Wig Bar....On the 2012 the End Link that goes behind the Diesel Exhaust Fluid Tank to the frame...Driver Side was a real BEAR to install....If I do it again I think I will remove the DEF tank instead of practically breaking my wrists to get the job done on the OEM End Link. My old F350 was so much more solid on the road...trying to get back to that solid feel. I do love the 6.7L Diesel....just not the lack of quality that the earlier FORDS had.

  • Bryan and OJ,
You have both been helpful. Brian, I think you are very correct. When I purchased the 2012 F350 it did not have a Rear Anti Sway Bar. The Dealer offered to order up the Rear Anti Sway Bar parts for me at his price. I thought that sounded pretty good. Having had a slightly older F350 with a HEAVY duty rear Anti Sway Bar...I made the assumption I would be getting a heavy duty unit. When the parts came in I was astounded by the Puny diameter of the actual Anti Sway Bar...I seriously questioned the parts guy and the service manager...The response I got was that the new bar was computer designed to do all that the older larger bar did. I believe that to be B.S. I think it is more like just another example of attempting vehicle WEIGHT reduction.

Since the 2012 truck really seems to have what seems like front aggravated sway....I ordered up a HELLWIG Big Wig front bar. The issue might actually be the coil springs vs the X code Snow Plow springs I had on the last 350. Installed it yesterday. It is truly heavy duty....very much heavier than the stock unit....the diameter of the new one is 1.31 inches. The factory end links seem pretty puny connected to the HELLWIG Anti Sway Bar.
Time will tell..headed out on an extended trip this coming week with the Eagle Cap 950 Camper on board.
I told my wife I may just have to break down and buy the HELLWIG Anti Sway Bar for the Rear!!!!

    Thanks

  • It sounds like you need a larger REAR sway bar, not front. But the reason large rear sway bars don't come stock is they increase the tendency to overseer when empty.
  • I just finished installing Hellwig's BigWig rear sway bar and the regular Hellwig sway bar on the front of my 2008 F250. It made a bit of difference in the amount of sway on the first drive this afternoon on a winding back road. The ride was empty, I can't comment on handling when towing since we don't have a 5th wheel yet.

The factory front sway bar was almost the same size as the Hellwig front. However, the factory rear sway bar was tiny compared to the Hellwig.

Factory front 1.10" Hellwig replacement 1.25"
Factory rear 0.65" Hellwig BigWig 1.31"

Front sway bar was very easy. Reuses the same drop links and hardware. Only the bushings and brackets are replaced with the new sway bar. Probably an hour job.

The rear was a pain. The factory sway bar on my F250 was a wide bar, mounting at the shock mounts on the axle. The BigWig bar mounts over the differential and drive shaft and the brackets mount just near the differential housing at the axle tubes. I had to remove the passenger shock and parking brake cable bracket (at passenger shock). The bigger pain was removing the fuel tank skid plate and aft fuel tank mounting strap so I could move the tank an inch inboard to remove and replace the driver's side sway bar link at the frame. The tank is put back in place when finished of course, but it does add to the task.

If you order, check the hardware in the kits to ensure you have everything. I was shorted some 7/16" x 2 3/4" bolts and washers for the end links and had to make a trip to Fastenall. If I had been performing the install on a weekend, it would have been quite painful.

I don't know how much of a difference there is in the 2012 and 2008 models, but I hope this helps some.

    OJ

Edit : The rear BigWig bar has 3 positions for the end links to increase the force exerted by the sway bar.
