Help me pick a tow vehicle

We will be towing a Jayco travel trailer, 7500 lb loaded, 31 feet over all. We would like to find a used 2010 - 2012 gas engine, crew cab that would be suitable for towing this trailer. The truck would only be used for towing and the occasional errand to pick up over size items. I am not a techie, but would like some advice to start narrowing down makes and models. Thanks for any help.
  • I had a 26' TT (30ft tip to tail), loaded weight was 6800lbs. Towed it with a Sierra 1500, with tow package. That was about the heaviest/largest trailer I would have wanted to tow with it. It was within all capacities on the truck, and it towed okay, but I wouldn't have gone any bigger.

Bought a 3/4 ton diesel, and ended up buying a bigger trailer shortly thereafter.. Found a really great deal on both, so it worked out in the end.

  • I would get a 3/4 ton if it were me. You would pretty much max out a 1/2 ton, IMO. Ask me how I know?! :)
  • Any of the 3/4 ton gas jobs would be fine in pulling that load. I like the GM series others like dodge or ford. Best way to judge is go drive all 3 and figure where your payment/finances takes you. A 1/2 ton could do it, but in todays market an 3/4 ton gas gives you so much payload and could be cheaper to purchase. Plus you have room to move up or if you ever overpack your not worried about exceeding the trucks capability. Basically it comes down to what you want and like and the only way to solve that is go out and search.
  • half ton truck with the towing package, from any of the three US manufacturers. Avoid Japanese trucks.
