Help! Water under the skin, delamination and damage.

Hi Everyone!
So happy to be here in this forum! I just bought a truck camper after dreaming of one for 20 years, and I love it. Unfortunately, it turns out it has some major issues I wasn’t aware of when I bought it, so would be grateful for your wisdom while I try to piece together a creative solution!

My camper is an 05 Arctic Fox cabover camper. I noticed some drooping and delamination on the undercarriage that hangs over the truck cab, and then saw some water leaking out of it as well, so I figured (and worried) there was water in there. I took it to an RV guy to see if we could take the skin off, but he said it wasn’t worth it, that it was probably already too late and instructed me instead to cut a couple of small holes and cover them with little grates. Well, I started cutting into it today and confirmed my worst fear, all the cardboard is waterlogged, but at least I didn’t see any mold yet. Although I only opened up a 1 inch hole. Wondering if anyone has any experience with this? Should I stuff desiccant packets In maybe? Or is there anything else anyone could recommend? The first thing I did was re-caulk all the places on the nose where the water could get in, so Hopefully more water won’t come. I am just worried. Since I just bought the camper, I have no idea how long it’s been waterlogged like this ??.

Greatly appreciate your tips!

  • Is it a "silver fox" edition 2005?...if so, its aluminum frame and if so,the "rot" might be only limited to the thin wood that's between the skin and the foam blocking and aluminum structure....while the repair it self is still on the large side, it's not as bad as some of the others.

I did this repair on my 2005 af990..
  • I did such rebuild on my Fleetwood, who has aluminum skeleton.
Aluminum doesn't rot, so you always have base to start restoration.
Such damage on all-wood camper would require whole rebuild.
Pull the skin at least on 1 side and asses the damage.
  • Huge job, I did it to my Coachman ranger. With work and life it two winters. Good luck friend!
  • I'm really sorry to read this.

I bought my first camper back in late 2016. After using it for about 18 months I noticed the cabover starting to droop. I opened it up and when I realized how much rot was in there that was the end of that camper.
A place who did that type of work gave me a bid of $6-7000 to redo both sides. The camper wasn't worth putting $6-7000 in to it.

I learned my lesson and bought another camper back in July 2019. This time I knew what to look for and a good friend with a lot of RV experience helped me with the inspection.

    Good luck.
  • well you ain,t going to like this, if your going to fix it, you need to open it up. theres most likley lot of rot in there. so, find a repair shop who does this work. or jump in and do it. sorry some body sold you a spung. 40years back I did one , lot work. but like new when I rolled down the road. maybe the guy will take it back. yet its got lot years on it.
