Help with Final Choice: Silverado or Ram 1500

Yesterday I posted on confusing towing numbers. Last week I purchased a 2015 Ram Big horn with 5.7 hem and 3.92 axle. Payload of 1390 (on the door post sticker) and max of 15,900. Towing a 7500 trailer I learned from this group that I would at best max out the payload and possibly exceed. (900 tongue: 350 me, wife dog; 100 for hitch)

I was not happy! I decided to stop by the local chevy dealer on a lark and to my surprise they were able to get me into a 2015 Silverado with a 5.3 L V-8 for only 2 thousand more dollars. Payload of 1720 (on the door post sticker) and max of 11200. Now pulling a 7500 loaded trailer I have wiggle rom of 200-300 pounds.

Wife loves the Dodge and thinks the silverado rides like a truck but she also really likes the trailer. Interesting side note, my insurance agent owns the same Big Horn and said "don't worry about exceeding the payload, you'll be fine, no worries." Thanks for all the replies and help on my earlier post.

Thoughts-Sggestions.
  • What does that mean? You may want to return the dodge? How can you do that?

Just take the dodge to a cat scale and get individual axle weights..

Then take it same day with trailer.

Gets weights with truck and trailer with WD hitch hooked up, then another with it not hooked up..

As long as you are not over your axle weights on the door tag and the tire ratings for that weight you are fine.. Onece you get weighed you will know how much air to keep in the tires..

    Post all these #'s please...

  • IMHO.. 200-300 lbs is NOT wiggle room. Its literally one large man of extra. Think about it.. if taking an extra body makes you unsafe you NEED a 3/4 ton.

If you are trading.. get a 2500 otherwise keep the Ram. The Silverado is fantastic but the Hemi has more HP, More Gears in the transmission, and a deeper Rear end.

I agree with your wife, the GM is not as comfy as the Ram. But that is subjective. (not throwing down on the GM.. they are great trucks)

But if you upgrade, upgrade to a Ram 2500 Big Horn with the 6.4 Hemi. That is an upgrade.

Good luck no matter what you choose.

    Thanks!
