I have driven both with the same trailer and the same roads. They were the same trucks, 3500, DRW, Crew Cab, 8' box, 3.73 ratio, same wheels and tires, same options. The CTD is a Laramie with the Aisin, the 6.4 was a Laramie Longhorn with the 68RFE. The trailer is a 7' x 16' enclosed cargo trailer loaded to 6,500 pound continuously. While the 6.4 performed well, it did show its shortcomings. On the same grades, the 6.4 would downshift from 5th to 3rd or 2nd just to maintain speed, the CTD would continue along in 5th and gain speed. I live in the Ozark mountains just west of Branson, Mo. If you have ever been to Branson, you know what the roads are like, always uphill and around the curve. The 6.4 did perform well for what it is, it managed to average just under 9 MPG for the 650 miles I had it. My CTD averages 11+ MPG, even with a heavier foot.
