Hensley Bump

How does the Hensley Arrow work with a Diesel exhaust brake? Do you get the "Bump" when using the exhaust brake?

I briefly used a Hensley with my 12 CTD. Maybe 2-3 months worth. The problem with it is just what you're asking. When I had the EB on and let up on the pedal to slow down the EB would of course kick on and I would get the bump. Sometimes it was a little, but sometimes it would really bump.
It was worse when in a lower gear like 4th and coming into a corner. I'm not sure if the CTD has a stronger EB than Ford or GM or for what year of truck.

The HA was on a TT that was towed with a 2010 F150. Never hardly noticed the Bump with that truck. I upgraded trucks so that's why the short time frame. Ended up with a 5th wheel.
  • Interesting, I was all set to buy one but the BUMP is a deal breaker. As the EB works really good on my GMC
  • I would think it could be an issue as well. I've used both a HA and a PP and they are great hitches, but you avoid the bump by properly dialing in your TT brakes. Since your TT brakes are triggered by the "normal" brakes, nothing would cause your TT brakes to engage and the TT would come forward (ever so slightly) when the EB slows your truck and cause the "bump".

    Just my .02.
  • The bump happens with engine/exhaust braking. I would not consider it a deal breaker. If you are expecting it, its really no big deal. In a diesel, I can't imagine it being a huge bump.

If you are really concerned about it, a light touch on the brake controller or even just a light tap on the brakes and all is good.

I travel a lot of mountain roads, and engine braking causes a bump or two semi regularly. I know it and expect it and it's not big deal.

The advantages of the HA or PP FAR OUTWEIGH any bump issues. Get it, you will love it.
  • The advantages of the HA far outweight he noise of a bump. IMHO
  • I towed a heavy Nash 29V with a 2007.5 Dodge Cummins and a Hensley and I can tell you that the bump is no more than a slight irregularity like running over a large tar seam in a concrete road. Nothing at all.
  • Good morning, I have the PP hitch. I love the bump, it wakes me up to let me no that the exhaust brake came on and we are going down hill. All kidding aside, raise the controller from 6.5 to 7.00 and enjoy your trip.
