I have always agreed with this principle. Let the 1 tons be the "boastful" models with the torque and HP wars and put an engine in the 3/4 tons that will get better MPG and still provide enough power to get their weights moving down the road.
The problem is cost of R and D for yet another diesel and complying with EPA regs in yet another engine, etc. I think its just too cost prohibitive for the manufacturers.
