I wonder why they didn't just put the baby ISB (4BT) in it. It's an ISB 6 cylinder, with 2 cylinders lopped off. Used alot in stationary power applications, and commercial local delivery trucks. I think it's about 3.5 liters.
Sorry, I couldn't help it...........
As far as refinement for use in a pickup, everything that has been done to the 6 cylinder ISB in the Dodge trucks, can also be done to the 4 cylinder version...
I am sure you are correct, that they could refine it, but I do believe that there are different expectations as far as NVH levels, and comfort in a 1500 vs a 2500/3500. And my guess is (only a guess) it might be less expensive to develop a new engine that could be used in other applications than to spend $$$$ on the 4BT.
In regard to Nissan, I think they specifically targeted that in-between market of 1500 vs 2500. They think they will sell there, and are going to try to prove the nay-sayers wrong. It seems to have worked for the EcoDiesel, and perhaps it is too early to tell if the Nissan has failed.
