A little FYI here the new 6 speed autos and 3.08/3.42's are the same as the old 4 speed and 3.73's or 4.10's.
I am aware, regardless IMHO with a 6900lb dry trailer he needs 3.73.
Probably doesn't matter anyway about the gears. More than likely with a 6900 lb dry trailer, he is, in the real world, going to be over limit on payload.
GM has decided this is the way to go on this whole deal about gearing: put tall gears in for the final, and make up for it with more multiplication in the transmission gears, specifically in gears one thru four.
Toyota ( Tundra ) has taken the other approach, and runs 4.30 final gears, and use less multiplication in the trans. There are advantages and disadvantages to both ways. Pick your brand, and pay your money. Personally I prefer the method Toyota has chosen.
Payload limits often still raises it's ugly head even in 3/4 ton trucks, because the limit still ends up being what just two rear tires can carry. Which leads us to the world of duallies, which for the majority of travel trailers sold, neatly, and efficiently solves these load carrying problems.
EDIT: and PS to that....if I were pulling a 9000 pound travel trailer, the dually would the one I would be hitched to.
