That's not good at all. But from your description, I am not sure if any other tiedown system would have prevented the damage. The weakest link will give first.
Just be glad the frame of your truck is still straight. With the often overloaded smallish pickups over here in Europe, the energy would have likely bent the frame above the rear axle... I have seen plenty of pictures of that exact scenario.
