Very true... If you're replacing the receiver anyway, you may as well go with a Superhitch for a few dollars extra, and do it right.
That's probably what I would've done had I realized I needed an extension. Originally I was towing my trailers with a long shank, and as long as I didn't make too sharp of a turn, everything was fine. Then one day I cut it a little short in the grocery store parking lot, and dented the trailer. Later on I put a hole in the trailer's skin in the same spot, and finally decided I needed an extension. It's only 14" total extension, though. Not near the 48" you need.
