There should not be a problem with air flow to the engine. More air will flow around and through the bike than you think. This would be my preference. It would be easy to change out your tow hooks for receivers and then you would have a double point in the front.
Big advantage to the double mount points is it will keep the bike from rocking back and forth as you go over bumps. Not that extreme on the interstate, but getting back to where you are probably camping is another story. It probably wouldn't cost much to have a fab shop add a pair of twin tubes for this. May also solve you height issue.
While you could carry the bike in the rear, I would not recommend carrying it on an extension with enough space to get in the camper. This would put too much torque on the hitch when going down the road.
If you went with a twin tube setup in the rear, you could set up one as a pivot point and the other end as a latch. Pop the latch and then pivot the bike out of the way.
