Carry it on the front. It gets covered in bugs, but stays clean of mud. I have had mine on the front for four years. Have been down to Utah in the summer - no air flow issues.
Did the North, Alaska, Yukon & NWT with thousands of miles on gravel roads. Back of camper was caked in mud, but the motorcycle up front was clean!
