Hitch mount generator box build

Finally got some pics of my generator box mounted on the truck.

Started with this box (42.5"L x 20.5"H x 24.75"W). Added removable casters and got a Dee-Zee toolbox hitch mount from Tractor Supply.

This project went through many iteration as I discovered just how much ventilation is needed for a generator box. Testing in its current configuration, in the shade on a 90* day the inside of the box got no hotter than 106* after 90+ minutes on heavy load (portable heater). All vents, except the door giving access to the generator outlets, have screen over them to prevent insect homesteading.

I fished an electrical cord along the chassis and come out in the bed of the truck with enough to make it to the shore power door on the camper so I can stay plugged in the whole time the camper is on the truck.

The corner markers are just driveway markers from Home Depot cut to length so they're just visible over the hood. I've wrapped a few of my own fly rods so I picked up a set of ferrules of the appropriate diameter and made an extension to give me a set of branch feelers for the times I'm working my way back wooded areas.

Haven't had the opportunity to use these yet.

Also added an extended run kit for the Honda.

  • Thanks. If it makes you feel better this is what I used for a few years. (The genny and a couple 5 gallon diesel cans are under the tarp.)

  • You're not worried about obstructing air flow to your radiator? Do you drive a lot of hills or in significant heat? Just my 2 cents, otherwise it looks like you did a great job.

Did you use a standard extension cord to run power to the rear box/truck bed?
  • I was initially concerned but on a trip last year to Montana during a heat wave I tested with the current receiver extension and one that lifted the box 4" to allow free airflow over the tranny cooler and saw no significant difference. Although the box had a lot more wobble with the riser.

The extension cord is just a 20a outdoor cord from Home Depot. Actually, the end coming out of the genny box and the end coming out under the front hitch are molded ends the same cord. I cut to length and added plug/socket as needed.
  • I have driven many thousands of miles with my generator on the front with TC and boat and have seen almost zero difference in temp.

I have thought about running a cord like you have also.
