I also use T/H and manual mode to keep mine from hunting too much. I guess I've spent too much time driving manual transmission vehicles. I like to control what gear it's in.
And regards to the transmission - the 6L90 in the 3/4 ton Burbs is pretty stout. I have 130K on mine, and it still runs/shifts flawlessly. I fully expect a minimum of 200k miles.
