Holding Tank Connections

Is anyone familiar how the holding tanks are joined to the piping from the trailer?

The manufacturer cuts a 3 inch hole for a 2 inch pipe to allow for alignment and it leaves a wonderful space big enough for a mouse, or worse yet, a pack rat to get through to the area between the floor and the plastic or metal skin. They can either make a nest in there or remove the insulation to make a nest somewhere else.

I would like to drop the tank to correct the problem before I lose all the insulation but am not sure what will happen to whatever connection (metal band or PVC glue) they use.

Would appreciate any input.
  • All furnished good advice I have already used in sealing off pipes where they can be reached either from above or below but I can't even get my hand 4 inches into the space between the tank and floor and the pipe is in the middle.
  • My gray tank is leaking where the pipe joins, not much room to work, but it looks like they just used plumbers putty. The only way I could fix it was to use plumbers putty and wrap it up in water proof tape. I used spray foam to seal my gaps.
  • If you can get at it, steel wool is better, they may like the taste of foam, but not steel wool.
  • I would make a cover plate or use foam long before I dropped the tank.
  • I'm guessing you can see the area in question. If so go ahead with the spray foam but pack the hole with stainless steel pot scrubbers first. Let 'em try to chew through that!

  • The only one that I ever dropped, it was a plastic welded flange. The pvc plumbing was glued to it.
