My trailer has two 50 gallon tanks and they are held from underneath the tank by 3 (1/4"?) steel bars underneath of each tank and so far they are holding up fine. I think most all campers could be modified to use the same setup very easily and you could ditch the plywood/OSB.
I agree and both Lowes and HD carries various thicknesses of Al and steel angle iron that you could use to build a bolt together support system however robust you feel it needs to be. Might cost a few bucks, but we all know RVing isn't cheap in some respects anyway and what this investment insures against is IMO well worth the cost and your time to do it right.
When I redid my underbelly I found some issues with both the support systems on my FW tank and grey/black tank that I fixed to my satisfaction when I had the underbelly down. There seems to be a variety of "schemes" for tank supports out there so one needs to get up in there, see what they have and then "FIX IT" to where they are happy with the end result of whatever they do. Personally I would not use plywood like one picture showed and would opt for a very heavy AL or steel angle iron system. One area IMO that should be looked at carefully is a lot of the supports that go from frame rail to frame rail are attached with poor welding or these sheet metal screws to the frame rails and I have read more than one post where the welds have failed or the screws have rusted out and let go so shoring up that attachment system is IMO a good idea.
