The "area under the curve" on a dyno chart is hugely important, as is gearing, weight and many other factors.
Plus tow vehicles and race vehicles are different.
My Cummins is slower than a DMax and it bothers me not one iota.
Peak power is only part of the story, so like everything else in life, you have to look at the bigger picture.
F1 cars are fast, make a ton of HP and are light...but make no torque and would be terrible to tow with. A Mack truck won't win many races at the track, but can tow 80K lbs up a hill 24/7.
Reminds me of an old joke that's somewhat true:
Q: What's the difference between a 1200 hp Turbo Supra, and a 450 hp Turbo Supra?
A: About two-tenths in the quarter mile :p
