All I can say is find someone who has a diesel and try it. I promise it will only take one time of sitting behind the wheel of a diesel pickup with a heavy trailer to make you realize that V10, Big V8, etc, there just is no comparison when it comes to pulling. WIth that said, each person should buy what makes them happy!
With all due respect, its about what the driver is comfortable with. Some people just have it in their heads that a gas engine at 3500 RPM's is on the verge of destroying itself and HATE gas engines. Some people have it in their heads that a diesel is too expensive and isn't worth the higher MPG's because they plan to trade in the vehicle long before the "break even" point of cost. Yea its nice to have a diesel that produces all that power at 1800 rpms, but that doesn't mean that its pulling any better than that V10 producing similar power at 3800 rpms (not sure of exact rpms, just an example).
Do what YOU want to do. Its your money, buy what makes you feel comfortable. Personally I am comfortable pushing 3500 rpms up a mountain in my gasser engine. I tow infrequently enough that a diesel just isn't worth the high cost.
