I towed commercially years back at 28k-32k with the old school carburated 225-245 hp at 375 ft lbs 454/460 big blocks that were king in their era. Those trucks also pulled my RVs when I could find time.
Finally got into a DRW Dodge/Cummins with a 160/400 engine and NV4500. Boy what a relief from hours on end day after day of having to hear a big block bellow all day or nite but more importantly so much more actual pulling power down the road without all that RPM/noise/high fuel usage.
After a trip or two I finally learned how to operate the Cummins pulling the 28k combined load at the then legal 55 mph. My monthly fuel bill was cut 18 % which was huge.
IMO the new gen smallblock gasser would work for most RV folks as they don't have to sit behind the wheel 10-12 hours every day.
Comparing the new gen smallblock 350 hp gasser with 300-400 ft lbs to a 350 hp diesel with 650-850 ft lbs which is what the topic the OP posted.
Now GMs 8.1 or Fords newer gen V10 are different animals than the new high rev'n smallblocks. These engines could compete with the older gen diesels.
EDIT;
I've yet to see anyone with smallblock gasser in any size LDT pulling combined for a living on any LTL website. There are a couple of members who are still pulling short local runs with the 8.1/V10 at those weights.
