I've said a few times over the years, if I were deaf and didn't have a tach, I couldn't tell the difference towing with the gas or diesel rigs I've owned. Diesels are stronger but, not necessarily faster. The newest ones are by a small margin as they have gobs of horsepower at lower rpm. The previous diesels as recently as ten years ago didn't have much on their gas engine counterparts. Twenty years ago they had nothing on them. I owned one. 160 hp doesn't get much work done with even a light TT against any wind at all. All that torque (400 ft/lbs) and it couldn't apply it above 2500rpm so O/D was the only option at hw speeds. That meant 400 ft/lbs X .69 = 276 ft/lbs to the drive shaft. It was pathetic. Flywheel torque is just the beginning. It's what's at the rear axle that counts. Just the same, every one of my trucks has made me happy!
X1000 ... outstanding comments!
Finally, an island of sanity in the diesel-versus-gas sea of chaos. :C
Hannibal has owned both, has great insight, and I love to reference him when the simpletons start declaring "if you've ever towed with a diesel you'd never want to drive a gasser again."
I have owned both and tow with both every week.I will take a whole lot for me to ever go back to a gas TV. The thing with Hannibal is that if you look at his list of TV's he never compares apples to apples. Going from an 03 Cummins SO to an 05 Hemi. Then from an 05 Hemi to a 2010 Ford.
If he could compare a 05 Hemi to a 05 Cummins then he probably wouldn't think the same about the Hemi. Same with the 2010 5.4 gas compared to a 2010 Diesel. Our newest addition to our fleet is a 2012 6.2 Ford and the is no comparison to the 2012 diesels. Will the gas tow as fast as the diesels? Yes they will. Hp is Hp. Do they do it as easily? NO WAY
We can certainly agree to disagree, but is there that much difference between an 03 CTD & an 05 CTD? If Hannibal had an 01 or 02 with the old fuel delivery system I'd agree.
You've posted before about the Ford 6.2L you use for work, and I still say if it's as bad as you say to get that thing to a dealer to get looked at. Many, many happy 6.2L owners out there, some of whom came from diesel and are quite pleased with the 6.2L V8's performance.
