I think the 5L Cummins is real overkill for the present Titan. Unless they really beef the truck up, all they will have is a very powerful half ton with less payload capacity than the gas model. Better to put it in a new 3/4 ton, then they would have a real bridge between todays 1/2 tons and SRW 1 tons, instead of the present crop of diesel 3/4 tons which are just SRW 1 tons with less payload capacity.
I think the old 1/2 ton designation should be tossed. Is the f150HD a "half ton"? With 2800lbs+ of load capacity? Nope. Nissan will probably do the same idea. An over-built "consumer" truck with 1-ton (actual load) capacity. Nissan already has a relationship with Dana Corp. So basically they just need a stout frame, and higher spec parts all around.
Comparing when they came out, the Nissan Titan was much more impressive than the Tundra. Nissan botched the rear diff cooling, but put a fully boxed frame under it. Toyota under-framed it, and popped transmissions and camshafts in the first year. It seems Nissan understands trucks. The Titan was ground breaking, the tundra, not so much.
