Hose Fitting Cracked

Hey guys. Me and the ol lady have a "maiden voyage" planned for our slide-in coming up in a couple weeks. I haven't really checked out the camper since we bought it so I figured itd be a good time to get started.

Filled up the fresh water tank and it starts leaking. EEK! My heart almost stops... I glance at where its leaking and its just a hose fitting. The drain hose screws onto the bottom of the fresh water tank and it somehow got cracked on the fitting itself. This seems like an issue because I can not figure out how to go about fixing it. I definitely DO NOT want to have to pull the tank for any reason.

My grandpa suggested drilling out the hole some and tapping it then buy a step-up fitting that goes from the size of the hole to the size of the hose threads. Simple! Sorta. Is there a correct solution?

  • So, the elbow that drains the tank is cracked? Pretty sure you can get those at Lowes or Home Depot or RV supply. Looks like a 3/8 barb with a 1/2 pipe fitting.

The drain valve on the back you can get an an RV supply. Here's a link on RV.net.

    Drain valve post:

You just need the right size for the inside diameter of your drain tube.

You might want to pull an new drain tube while you're at it.

The drain is in the back, so you can drain your tank when the camper is on the truck.

Not to say it doesn't exist , I have never seen a petcock on the tank end . Hopefully El Camino Man will sign back on to explain better so we be a better help . At this point we are guessing .

I have a 2000 Maverick and my brother has a 92 Shadow Cruiser, both, were built with a petcock at the tank and the drain tube goes straight out the bottom of the TC. Not a good setup when you want to drain your tank without unloading the camper. I modded mine to drain out the back.

El Camino Man: Your drain out the back, was probably done for this reason. Keep truck bed dry while draining the tank.
  • Im baaaack! With piiiics! This is at the front drivers side of the camper looking from underneath.

The hole did have some threads which was cracked causing the leak. It wasn't hangin on by much so I took it off.

And this is where the water shoots out. This is at the rear drivers side.

What I don't understand is how the water stays in the tank? It didn't have a valve whatsoever. I can see where that petcock could be missing. Thatd be handier! Also, why in the world would they run the drain clear to the back?
  • That petcock is usually not at the tank end. Its at the drain end. Im not sure where his leak is, but i think its at the tank end because he said "he hopes he doesn't have to pull the tank. Not to say it doesn't exist , I have never seen a petcock on the tank end .

  • It sounds like the drain hose. Usually attached to a petcock , often at the rear . It may have had water in it and froze or its old .
If the tank is located near the front pass thru window , you might have to remove the step up to the cabover to access it . Try to remove the screws and lift the top off to take a peak.
The other way to remove it is through the underbelly of the tc while off the truck .
Here is some info with pics.

  • Maybe its not an overfill. It attaches on the very bottom of the tank right beside the hose where you get the water to the rest of the camper. Im not a very good explainer.... lol. Ill shoot ya guys some pics tonight.

It seems to be where you can drain all the water in the tank to sanitize, winterize, etc. Why it goes clear to the back of the camper when the tanks in the front, Ill never know...
  • I agree a picture would be great since what you are describing seems very unusual. Overflows, aren't a problem and leak on purpose if you overfill your tank.
