How are the new Ford diesel engines?

The whole point is that if Ford lived up to their end of the deal, this would not be an issue during the factory warranty time or a factory extended warranty.

With the big three being all good performance wise, why take a gamble on not having Ford honor their warranty. BTW diesel in the US does not meet the Bosch standard for their pumps. Canadian diesel does, however there was a report here of a CP4.2 failure in Canada!

OP, this would be the reason to be real careful. This is a good site to go to. Look for common problems with this engine. You will soon see there is A LOT of turbo and valve problems..........and radiator problems......among others.

Agree 100% with this on the 7.3PSD. My father in law has owned 5 of those over the years. Numerous repairs required on all. Not major ones, but that engine was all about mileage!

According to C.R. magazine, the Ford 6.7 gets the best mileage of the diesels by a fairly wide margin.

I love how people talk about how great the 7.3 was! I know more than a few diesel techs that put their kids through school working on the 7.3 turds. Maybe the repairs are cheaper, but they are more numerous especially for an engine that seemingly doesn't make enough power to break itself!

The 6.7 is not 100% trouble free with trouble rates less than or equal to its competition. There are a vocal few that would have you believe that it is a time bomb. If Ford has installed a water in the fuel system warning system and and water separation that does provide protect for the engine, why are they blaming the problem on the consumer and denying warranty.

It is great that people all love their new 6.7 Powerstrokes. But, just be aware that you could be caught in this warranty dead zone.

If I had one, I would keep:

1. Fuel Log
2. All fuel receipts
3. All receipts for Ford diesel fuel additive
4. Log of each additive addition to fuel
5. Log each draining of water separator.
6. Catch fuel from each draining and put it in a jug.
7. Not own it after the factor warranty or factor extend warranty is up.

Then I would go read the forums full of issues with the single cylinder CP4.1 on the VW sites. NHTSA included the Ford 6.7 in their investigation of the VW diesels. We are not making this issue up out of thin air. It is a real problem and bigger yet is Ford in many cases in blaming the consumer.

There is nothing to prevent the injection pump roller follower piston from turning in the pump bore, which takes out the roller and cam lobe sending metal pieces through out the fuel system. Every fuel system component has to be replaced when this happens.

GM on the other hand with the same CP4.2 is silently just fixing them under warranty.

After the 6.0 and 6.4 you would think Ford would do the same, however that does not seem to be the issue. In a few more years that 6.7 may be grouped in with the 6.0 and 6.4 when people talk about the 7.3 being the last good Powerstroke. Only time will tell.

In the mean time RAM still uses the more reliable CP3 Bosch pump.

I bought my first Ford in November of 2010. It has 50k miles and has been the best truck I have ever owned. I had a problem with the turbo the day after picking up the truck....the turbo was replaced under warranty and I have not had a single problem with the truck since. We also own a 2010 Duramax which we plan to replace this winter. Even though it's been a descent truck it won't be replaced with another GM.
