How big of a TT can an Expedition safely handle?

We have been researching bunkhouse style TT's for awhile now and are ready to purchase. Our TV will be my 2013 Expedition EL with HD tow package with max of 9200lbs/920 tongue. The most limiting factor is my 1502 payload. We have two children and will be using this TT for horse shows. Tack will primarily be loaded in the trailer with the horses so we'll just be adding clothes and food for about 3 days, paper plates, plastic cups, utensils etc so I don't think I'll be adding much weight, might occasionally have to fill water, and will have weight of batteries and at some point in the future a generator. We will use a WD hitch with sway control. I am worried about weight and the length as I've read the "rule of thumb" which puts us safely at 25' with the EL's 131" wheelbase. Is that the box or hitch to bumper 25'? I ran the TV's actual numbers on the changinggears calculator and figuring a 12% tongue weight it put loaded trailer max at 7077/ tongue 920 and with a 20% safety cushion 5662/tongue 736.
Passport has two models the 2810BH (5145/565) and 2920BH (5385/625) that would meet our needs and be within our weight/tongue range. My concern is the length. The 2810 is tip to tip 31'10" and the other 32'10". Is this too long or manageable because of the lower weight? We also like the Salem Cruise Lite 272QB which is heavier and has a tongue weight of 735, the one on the lot is 5883 dry, length 32'10". Also considering a Jayco 26BHS which shows 5470/675, though it's been our experience the Jayco's tend to leave the factory about 400lbs heavier than the stated dry weight because of options. This one is 29'11" hitch to bumper. Are any of these feasible? Short of a hybrid expandable which my husband refuses to consider I can't sleep all of us ( would prefer not to use dinette or couch) in 25', the closest is a less than ideal master situation in the Jay Feather X254 @ 27'4". I'd love opinions from others on what I can safely tow, particularly from other Expy owners. All the numbers get mind boggling to a newbie and after visiting the three local RV dealers each time we were told we could haul things I know we have no business even looking at. Sorry so long, thank you in advance for input/opinions.

Thank you for confirming my reservations about climbing over the dinette, and possibly sleeping kids just to get in/ out of bed.

    This is my floorplan...

Give you a model I like. Primetime Tracer 250AIR. It is a model of interest for me if I was to NOT get a hybrid next.

7000 pounds loaded is a good place to be for you, so under 6k dry. I would not worry about length. Meet all the weight limits, use a WDH with integrated sway control and camp happily.

This is my husband's take on the issue, but I'm a worrier...
  • Towing always seems to be a controversial issue here, and the engineers come out of the woodwork. All I can tell you is that I had a 2000 Expy with a tow package and it handled my 2000 27' Fleetwood Prowler with no issues at all. A little sway with trucks, but had I been concerned I could've added a second anti-sway bar. I'm no longer acquainted with the numbers, but the prowler was no "Lite-weight". Hope that helps.
  • You have done some good research so far. 7000 pounds loaded is a good place to be for you, so under 6k dry. I would not worry about length. Meet all the weight limits, use a WDH with integrated sway control and camp happily.
  • 5500-6000 pounds dry and 7000 gross for a max tongue weight of 900 lbs. replace the P rated tires with LT's, use a good hitch/anti sway system especially for the upper limits. I would suggest a tranny sensor as well as additional cooling if you are going to push it hard all day.

We tow our 25 ft ( not sure total length) 4200lb dry weight bunkhouse in the Rockies every trip which means a lot of steep climbs and descents. The 07 with it's better tranny is faster up the steepest stuff but on the open road both are so smooth that I tend to forget the trailer is back there and keep up with traffic. That is bad not just because of the trailer tires but also at those speeds, the MPG sucks.

We use a basic bar and chain WDH and a single friction sway bar. Early on I felt the smallest amount of sway when trucks passed us or we were hit by a gust of wind. Once I got it dialed in it it was solid no matter what passed us. We have had a blast of wind move the whole set up sideways but it didn't wiggle.

Our Expys have payloads of 1565 and 1745 lbs so we put the stuff in the trailer that can hold a additional 3000 lbs. No issues.

  • As you mentioned payload is your biggest issue and is reduced anytime anything is added besides a 150lb driver and tank of gas, you may only have 1000lbs to work with. Our 32' TT is well over 1K of tongue weight with batteries and full propane tanks, you will need a high quality WD/SC hitch to control these long rigs particularly at interstate speeds and under windy conditions. There are forum members that tow with an Expy, they could provide specifics on their towing combination and what they have found as limiting factors. Good luck and enjoy your new TT.
  • Welcome to the forum.

First, thank you for teaching me about Jayco's new X254. One thing that I will tell you that you will hate about it is climbing over the table to get in and out of bed. I currently have that on my floorplan, and HATE IT!

Other than that, I can't add much but Good luck.
